First things first--get your hands on a proper food grinder. (Not a blender or a food processor--the texture won't be right.)
Mine is in here, somewhere.
I recommend delegating this type of chore.
Success! It's in the box with the other infrequently use kitchen equipment (the electric carving knife and spaeztle press).
Isn't it gorgeous? My mother brought it with her from Germany forty-three years ago. Since she doesn't do much elaborate cooking anymore, she passed it on to me.
Now the actual recipe.
This is twenty-four ounces of cranberries and two seedless oranges. (I've doubled the recipe because we're going over to friends for Tofurkey, and this is one of my contributions.)
Grind them all together.
It's good to have a little slave to do the grunt work.
And a big one for backup.
The last step--stir in some sugar. I've seen recipes that call for as much as three or four cups of sugar, but that's way too sweet for us. Start with a small quantity (about a quarter of a cup) and keep tasting as you add more. I've found that it gets sweeter as it sits, so err on the tart side.
Voila--Cranberry Relish.
Happy Thanksgiving!!
